ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENTS OF THE NORTHERN CURONIAN SPIT
  (present Lithuania)

Nida

  1. The former Youth Hostel (Jungendherberge) existed between World War I and World War II. Nowadays several shops are located there.

  2. Grounds of the G. D. Kuwert's Inn. Later, from 19th till the beginning of the 20th century, there were several hotels "Konigin Luise", "Kurischer Elch" and "Nordlische Linnea". The oldest one - "Konigin Luise" - was built by Blode. At present, the Jurate Hotel is located there.

  3. Former guest house "Villa Helene" was built in 1907.

  4. Evangelic Lutheran Church in Nida was built in 1887 - 1888. Rev. K. G. Echternach, who worked in Nida from 1876 until 1894, initiated the construction of the church. From 1966 until 1988, it was occupied by the Curonian Spit History Museum. The organ in the church was built in 1984. Finally, in 1988, the church was put back to service.

  5. Old building - former warehouse.

  6. Kuwerto st. 2. Traditional fishermen's dwellings from the beginning of the 20th century. Skruzdynes st. 3, Nagliu st. Nr.1, 2, 4, 8 and others.

Juodkrante church

Preila and Pervalka

  1. Preila School. Built in 1907.

  2. On the small island at the end of the Zirgai Horn, the Pervalka lighthouse was built in 1900.

  3. Traditional fishermen's huts (19th - beginning of the 20th century). Preilos str.77, 71, 79 and others.

Juodkrante

  1. Juodkrante School was built in 1902 - 1903. At present it bears the name of L. Reza.

  2. The former "Hotel May" building was constructed in 1879. It was owned by K. May. At present it is the resort "Kregzdute".

  3. Cottage "Villa Diana" was built in 1883 by O. Sturmhoefel. Since 1989 it has been the Santauta Hotel.

  4. Cottage "Villa Monbijau" was built in 1881 by court assessor Hinz from Isrutis (Isterburg). After World War II, the culture house and the library were set up there.

  5. The cottage "Villa Jenny" was built in 1881. Later it was reconstructed into the "Hotel Waldfrieden". Nowadays it belongs to the Lithuanian Botany Institute.

  6. The cottage "Villa Flora" was built in 1863 by the owner of the amber excavation company, M. Becker. The post office was situated in it from 1923 until 1938. This building is protected by the state as an architectural monument.

  7. After her husband's death in 1883, Mrs. L. Stellmacher built the cottage "Elisabeth". The Juodkrante post office occupied it from 1938 until 1945. After World War II, the police, local government and dispensary established their ofices there.

  8. Cottages "Villa Lobell" and "Villa Bein". The latter was built in 1881 by Mrs. C.Bein from Variskiai (Warischken) near Tilze. The Tilze municipality bought it from the Klaipeda County in 1905 and turned it to a resort for children.

  9. The cottage "Villa Linanna" was built in 1881. Its name comes from two women's names Lina and Anna. Presently it is the resort "Smilga".

  10. The building of the present post office was built in 1865.

  11. In 1865 Edward Stellmacher from Tilze bought an inn in Juodkrante and built the hotel "Kurischen Hofs". In 1903 R. Gudaitis bought it for 100 000 reichmarks and owned it until 1938. The hotel was famous for its garden with a dance floor, which had a nickname "Birza" (exchange) because of many young couples had met there when dancing. At present, "Kurischen Hof" buildings are owned by hotel "Gintaras".

  12. The modern style cottage "Villa Hubertus" was built in 1899. It features large porches and towers.

  13. A rental house was built in 1860. Nowadays, many shops are located there.

  14. The cottage "Villa Gerlach" was built by the famous timber dealers, the Gerlach family from Klaipeda. Later it was used by guesthouse "Je langer je lieber".

  15. The cottages "Villa Irmtrud" and "Villa Anna Marie" were built in 1907.

  16. By the efforts of Lui Stellmacher, the heath resort with bath cure "Luisen - Bad" was built in 1881 - 1901. At present it is used by "Elektronas" and "Jura" resorts.

  17. Cottage "Villa Sommer" was built in 1909. The guesthouse and open air restaurant "Lehmann" operated here. Presently it is the resort "Ausra".

  18. Mrs. Rutkowsky from Karaliaucius built the cottage "Villa Liselotte". It bears her daughter's name who is buried in Juodkrante.

  19. In 1895 Mrs. Muler from Klaipeda established the cottage "Villa Maria". It became Forsthotel or Hotel Bachmann in 1938. Nowadays it is the resort.

  20. Juodkrante Evangelic Lutheran Church was built in 1884-1885 by the initiative of Juodkrante preacher O. E. Richter. After World War II the church was turned into a warehouse. It was restored in the seventies; windows were decorated with a stained glass. For some time it was used by the Miniatures Museum. In 1989 the building was given back to the church.

Alksnyne
  1. A former Alksnyne Forestry administration. The forestry was set up in 1898 - 1907. Several families live there now.


Smiltyne - Kopgalis
  1. A former Smiltyne Forestry administration. Main building was built in 1837 - 1867. At present, the old forestry building serves as a sportsmen guesthouse.

  2. The "Kurhauz Sandkrug" was built in 1901. It belonged to the Klaipeda City. The magistracy used to rent it to private owners. The guesthouse had roulette, open-air cafe and restaurant. Nowadays it is the hotel "Smiltyne".

  3. Smiltyne forester's farmstead was built in 1908. Forester's family still lives in it.

  4. The "Kurhauz Suderszpitze" was built in the beginning of the 20th century. From 1921 until 1944 it belonged to the businessman H. Zaborowsky. This guesthouse had rooms to rent and an open-air restaurant. From the sixties till the eighties, it was the summer cafe "Smiltele". It is privately owned now.

  5. The building of the cottage "Sophia" was built about 1907.

  6. Former cottages which were built before 1907; Smiltynes st. 19, 21, 22

  7. Former cottage, built about 1910 (Smiltynes st. 11), at present is used by the Kursiu Nerija National Park Information Centre.

  8. The cottage (Smiltynes st. 10) was built in 1920. Now it is the Kursiu Nerija National Park Nature Museum.

  9. Former cottages, built in twenties; Smiltynes st. 8 and 9.

  10. Neringa Fortress. Its construction started in 1865. The fortress was rebuilt and reconstructed many times until 1890. Militaries used it until 1897. Later it became a semaphore for sail ships and air guard. Between World War I and World War II it was used as a harbour by border police and as a boat rent. Seaport workers' families settled in the garrison rooms. German soldiers came back and stayed from 1939 until 1945. They established an air-defence depot. They blew out some storerooms in 1945. After World War II the fortress was left deserted. Capital restoration took part from 1975 until 1979. The reconstructed fortress was granted to the Lithuanian Sea Museum-Aquarium.
